A full slate of activities will commemorate Veterans Day at Daytona State College on Nov. 11, highlighted by 12 local service men and women of World War II, Korea and Vietnam who will receive special recognition. This includes one of the first Navy WAVES, a 93-year-old woman.

Organized by the Daytona State Falcon Veterans Club and the college’s Office of Co-Curricular Activities, the event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Echo Plaza on the Daytona campus at 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach.

One and all are welcome to attend the free, public event, particularly current and former service members interested in how Daytona State’s Veterans Center can help with their transition into college life.

Organizations taking part in DSC’s Veterans Day commemoration include the American Ex-Prisoners of War Association, the Order of the Purple Heart, University of Central Florida PTSD Awareness and the Ormond Beach chapter of Rolling Thunder. The U.S. National Guard and various civilian organizations will add to the event with a collection of modern and vintage military assets.

Also marking the day, the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Color Guard will present the colors.

Among featured guest speakers is Dr. Melissa Paliani, a clinical psychologist with the Department of Veterans Affairs, who will speak about challenges veterans may face when transitioning into civilian life.
